Infection triggers an abnormal systemic response

Leads to organ dysfunction (brain, kidneys, lungs, heart, etc.)

Not just infection but it’s the body’s harmful overreaction to it

Infection → Sepsis → Septic shock (sepsis + hypotension requiring vasopressors + elevated lactate)
